THE CHARACTER

Character Name: Alphinaud Leveilleur
Series: Final Fantasy XIV
Canon Point: Post-Stormblood
Character Age: 18
Background: wiki here!!

Personality:
"Yet even the longest journey begins with the first step, does it not?"

Alphinaud's development on his journey is long and arduous for him, however in order to understand it, we must first know who he is at his core.

Alphinaud is an intelligent prodigy, having been one of the two youngest students ever to attend the Studium — he's generally the strategist of the group, one who is good with speaking to others and working out problems, even if he occasionally has his missteps. He's usually the one to do the talking, and he spends a great deal of his time thinking through what he, and others, need to do. He even spends a portion of the story commanding his own military.

"'Twould seem that collecting firewood is a new experience for Master Alphinaud. His must have been a privileged upbringing ..."

Having been not only a prodigy, spending most of his time studying, as well as being brought up a pampered son of a Sharlayan dignitary, he's grown to be rather sheltered in terms of the outside world. He says himself that if it weren't for the guidance he received, he would have attempted to start a fire with wet leaves. He's often learning new things about the state of his own world, and coming into contact with things that he'd only known about through books — though this is an exciting learning experience for him. He'll even make the mistake of going off on his own to help, only to not realize the danger he's putting himself in by doing so.

He's an incredibly active person, determined to get things done and keep moving forward, basically. He's always up to something, whether it be on his own or helping others, and he can be easily frustrated by being stopped from doing things to help out. He's unhappy when he's barred from going with the Warrior of Light on their journey into a dungeon, and Estinien remarks that he's hurt Alphinaud's pride by not allowing him to come on a dangerous journey. Although aware of his own faults, he still does have a manner of pride and confidence in himself, always hoping to help out wherever necessary. He's not one to sit by idly — not in the least.

Throughout much of the story, Alphinaud is actively working on his own faults, actually. His greatest mistake is being ignorant of his own shortcomings, and he readily acknowledges this. Because of his overconfidence and inability to recognize his faults, his own Crystal Braves are poisoned by the opposition from the inside, and this haunts him for a great deal of time, causing him to reflect on himself. He loses confidence in himself as a result, and is constantly in a state of moving on from who he once was. He states himself that he isn't worthy of the remaining Crystal Braves still willing to remain by his side, but he will do everything he can in order to become worthy.

Alphinaud is not a person who is easily deterred, and though he may take a moment to right himself after being shaken by something, he's likely to work hard to move on from it. In addition, he isn't the type to be deterred from those who are stronger than him, either, and will instead use their power to work hard and better himself — he notes Y'shtola's strength in magic and how he wants to work to have her level of mastery. And when Matoya doesn't show confidence in his ability, when they later return to her, he's created his own carbuncle, and makes a passing remark about how he's come prepared this time and let her belittle his obsidian carbuncle if she dares! (He doesn't want her to know he's said that, however.)

There are a great deal of difficult lessons he has to learn, including how to deal with the death of others close to him and the lengths to which people will go to for their own ideals. He deals with the deaths of multiple close friends, and while he doesn't deal with them well at first, he ends up channeling his energy into what he can do while simultaneously taking the time to reflect on what's going on. And while he must accept that what his friends have done were out of their own need to accomplish what they hold dear, he also recognizes that his enemies will do the same — and that of course he must hold that same level of conviction.

And his conviction is clear with his intense love of his friends and his desire to keep them safe. He spends a great deal of time looking for the lost Scions, and when Estinien's body and soul are taken by Nidhogg, Alphinaud's mind is clouded by his desire to save him above all else. He can sometimes jump to conclusions despite his better judgement when a friend is involved. In addition, he can be highly moved by his or others' emotions, being moved to tears by the Crystal Braves wanting to remain with him. Those who are important to him are highly important to him.

Speaking of those important to him, his sister tends to come above many. His relationship with her is shown more in depth in Stormblood, when he's shown to worry about her often and even put himself in danger if it means saving her. When she's first met after Heavensward's main story, she's poisoned, and his concern for her shows often, especially when the player speaks to him and sees him wondering about her condition. He also dives into her to save her from becoming a slave to Sri Lakshmi, at the risk of being caught in it himself if he were even a split second too late. It seems whenever she's injured, he's either right next to her, or worrying away from her — she's someone he just plain cares about. Though on the flip side of this, they tend to argue quite a bit — mostly Alisaie teasing him about something. He's definitely the twin that often loses those sorts of situations.

"For all his knowledge and intellect, Alphinaud is still but a boy."

In stark contrast to the more difficult parts of his life, there's the more light-hearted points — namely, how much of a boy he still is. Something he struggles with is his embarrassment toward the boy he was when he was younger, and those who know that boy show no mercy in bringing it up. This often results in a clearly embarrassed Alphinaud, hoping to change the subject. And when he can, he'll hide things he doesn't want others to know. When it's brought up that he's a skilled artist, he says that he doesn't remember where he picked up the skill, though when he leaves, Krile lets others know that he in fact picked up the ability because he was trying to impress girls, long ago.

Alphinaud is a delicate balance of being young and having a lot on his shoulders, but he does everything in his power to balance it on his own, even if he must sometimes turn to those closest to him — specifically, the Warrior of Light — in order to lighten his burdens. He's someone who labors for the protection of others rather than for the defeat of his enemies, and move forward he must.
